ANTI – CORRUPTION: the roles of Traditional Rulers

This is what we mean by Trad-customary Anti corruption plan . T-CAP

Every traditional ruler; every community chairman is entitled to a privileged information about the corruption cases involving member of the community

T.CAP

As a non governmental organization, the Community Anti-Graft Initiative (C.A-G.I) is focused at raising awareness against corruption, through strategic engagement with the traditional rulers and community institutions in anti corruption activities

Overtime, we shall continue to bring you concepts that will help increase people’s perception of corruption, and try to deminish the impact on the grassroots community development project. Corruption is everywhere, your community is not exempted.

Following our interaction with local community members, and the trends of corrupt practices in local communities, it becomes imperative to identify roles of traditional rulers and community chairman in anti corruption

Due to lack of trust in the anti corruption fight, the people failed to take action against corruption. Most communities have almost lost all to corruption. Some areas are in crisis now, over community funds. Some have lost their legitimate title as traditional rulers, because of bribery and corruption in courts. Many infrastructural projects sites in our communities have been vacated due extortion. Employment and training programs generated from the local content development policy, for Host communities are often converted by highly placed members of the community.

The fact is that every person standing trials or convicted for corruption offences comes from a village in Nigeria, which he calls his home Town. And, by increasing the community perception of corruption, we encourage the people to condemn corruption, using fines, excommunication, ostracism, and banishment, as alternative punishment for corruption offences.

The Trad-customary Anti corruption plan t-cap is a group of activities put together to empower the community chairman, and the traditional rulers with the rights to sanction any of their subjects indulged in corruption. It’s a system of Naming and Shaming members of the community facing corruption charges or convicted of fraud.

T-CAP was introduced as a way of strengthening anti corruption and promoting the UNCAC ( United Nations convention against corruption). And, to help achieve this, it includes, the Roles of a Traditional ruler : to stand as surety to members of their community facing corruption charges. This will help keep communities updated of the corrupt activities of their brother or sister, father or mother. It will also create a standard of administering the traditional punishment on corrupt practices.

COVID-19 : To Protect the warehouses, Stop the hoarding.

Watchdogging

In this second wave of covid-19 pandemic, Government at all levels must assure the people of transparency and accountability, in the distribution of palliatives/relief materials.

Anti corruption agencies, must begin now to devise means of ensuring every Nigerian gets a fair share. They should ensure effective monitoring and distribution of palliatives in all States.

And, as citizens we have the right to complaint, when we are denied share of palliatives, also have the trust, that our observations will be considered. To the traditional rulers and community leaders, they have a role: to ensure their communities benefit

COVID-19: C.A-G.I Calls on more Traditional Rulers to join voices;

As Ooni warns Nigerians on second wave

A non governmental organisation, the Community Anti-Graft Initiative (C.A-G.I) has called on traditional rulers and community leaders to swing into action, by raising awareness on the second wave of covid-19.

The president of NGO, comrade Suleiman Uche Odungweru said with more traditonal rulers engaged, Nigerians will be sure that, even in the rural villages, especially this festive period, all the protocols of covid-19 are maintained, and the people encouraged to save for the pandemic, considering the hardship it brought upon the poor Masses last time.

It will be recalled that, The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, has alerted Nigerians on the second wave of COVID-19, adding it is deadlier than the first.

The Ooni, who is the Co-chairman of the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria (NCTRN), issued the alert in his Christmas/New Year message.

“The pandemic is very much around. It is erroneous to think that the rampaging virus has gone after the first wave.

“The wave of corona virus we are dealing with now is deadlier than what we had in the first two quarters of the concluding year 2020, so I want to appeal to our people that it is not yet over.

“We must not lose our guards as we can hear in the news that more people are now testing positive to the virus Imagine the strange strain of the disease in some parts of the world, making some people blind while others are losing vital organs which is absolutely new.

While it is heartwarming that we now have vaccines coming up, the best way to cure this virus is not to get it.

Let us continue to wear our face masks, avoid crowds and continue to wash our hands with soap and clean water. We must take responsibility as our personal safety has a lot to do with the health of the entire country,” he said.

On the need for unity in the country and peaceful coexistence among the citizens, Ooni urged Nigerians to always focus on issues that strengthen togetherness rather than issues causing disharmony.

He congratulated members of the Christian family globally on the 2020 Christmas celebration.

“The history of Jesus Christ is full of testimonies inspiring enough to find him worthy of emulation”, he said, describing Jesus Christ as a complete representation of a tolerant and peaceful leader worthy of emulation.

He also called on the Federal Government to aggressively pursue youth emancipation programmes The Oba also called for the unveiling of recovery plans and policies capable of alleviating the suffering inflicted on the citizens by the prevailing economic crisis in the country.
